NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI (SōBuRen – ALL JAPAN BUDŌ FEDERATION)

WHAT ARE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

The Nippon Seibukan Dōjō and the Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei are mutually supportive organizations. The Nippon Seibukan Dōjō was created by Suzuki Masafumi-kanchō in 1952, and the Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei by him 1969. The founding of both occured in Kyōto. Sanctioned by the Japanese Imperial House, and currently under the leadership of Kawano Yasuo-kanchō, the organization is represented in 23 western countries. With a cultural, apolitical, and non-sports focus, its main objective is the preservation and promulgation of both koryū bugei 古流武芸 and gendai budō 現代武道. The organization thus preserves old ryūha while welcoming modern budō.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MEMBER OF NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ & ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

It represents your commitment to preserving classical and traditional Japanese martial arts both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, it will make it easier to network with legitimate, highly qualified teachers and practitioners. Through kensa kikan [regular examination sessions], you will be able to get your grades recognized and registered. You will be able to become a full, active member and to be accepted into prestigious budōsai [martial arts festivals], kōshūkai [training seminars], and enbu [martial arts demonstrations], which are often held in the Butokuden [Martial Virtues Hall] in Kyōto.

CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ & ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI IF I AM ONLY A MUDANSHA?

Yes, being a bujutsuka or budōka is not conditional on grade/rank. You can become an associate member. All who agree with the virtues and values associated with traditional martial arts are welcome in the Seibukan Nippon Dōjō and Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei. Is not necessary to be a kuro-obi (black belt) to become an associate member. However, only kuro-obi-holders can become active full-members.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER IN THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ & ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

What will you receive by belonging to the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei? Most importantly you will have the opportunity to take part in keiko [practice], kōshūkai [training seminars], enbu [martial arts demonstrations], and kōen [exhibitions] at substantial discounts. You will also receive digital copies of newsletters from delegations throughout the world.

WHAT ARE THE PURPOSE AND FOCUS OF THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ & ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

As previously mentioned the purpose and focus of the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō – Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei are to preserve, spread, and protect traditional Japanese martial arts to include: koryū bugei 古流武芸 and gendai budō 现代武道. Therefore all of the organizations’ activities are designed for this purpose. While working towards this purpose we seek to maintain a spirit of respect, harmony, and mutual cooperation.

IS THERE A GRADE/RANK REQUIREMENT FOR ASSISTANCE AND/OR PARTICIPATION?

Never! The Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei remain open to everyone, be it for national or international keiko [practice], kōshūkai [training seminars], enbu [martial arts demonstrations], and kōen [exhibitions], etc. The only requirement is to attend and participate with a spirit of mutual respect, and a desire to learn and expand one’s knowledge.

IS THERE ANY MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR MEMBERS OF THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei keiko [practice], kōshūkai [training seminars], enbu [martial arts demonstrations], and kōen [exhibitions], etc., operate under the laws of the host countries in which these events occur. The Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei do not independently offer any insurance.

DO THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI HAVE A CALENDAR OF NATIONAL AND/OR INTERNATIONAL EVENTS?

In addition to timely E-mails, you will receive information through digital newsletters prepared by the national and international branches of the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei.

IS THERE ANY OFFICIAL OR MANDATORY UNIFORM REQUIRED WHEN PARTICIPATING IN NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI EVENTS?

There is no official or mandatory uniform. It is expected that appropriate uniforms be worn depending upon the koryū bugei 古流武芸 or gendai budō 现代武道 one is participating in.

CAN I HAVE MY KURO-OBI [BLACK BELT) RANKS RECOGNIZED BY THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

After you have been an Associate Member for one to two years you may request your rank(s) to be recognized by the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei. This recognition would be part of the detailed Full-Member application process.

CAN I ADVANCE IN RANK DIRECTLY FROM JAPAN, WITHIN THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

The Nippon Seibukan Dōjō – Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei’s primary mission are to preserve, spread, and protect the classical and traditional martial arts of Japan. In order to accomplish this we must develop and promote our members. Thus, regular kensa kikan [regular examination sessions] will be held to test our members for advancement in rank. These promotion panels will be sanctioned by the honbu [headquarters] in Japan, and menjō [rank certificates] from the honbu will be issued upon successful testing.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

To become an Associate Member of Nippon Seibukan Dōjō – Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei, you must complete an application, be accepted, and pay 50€ annually. Full Member status requires a much more extensive application process, which is best explained in detail when one actually applies.

HOW CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF NIPPON SEIBUKAN DŌJŌ – ZEN NIHON SŌGŌ-BUDŌ RENMEI?

To become an Associate Member of the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō – Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei you must contact the Shidōin [designated adviser] of your country.

Country Shidōin:

If your country does not have a Shidōin (designated adviser) you must contact the Seiyō Shibuchō Sō Honbu Dōjō [Director of the Western Hemisphere], of the Nippon Seibukan Dōjō & Zen Nihon Sōgō-Budō Renmei. He will assist you or refer you to the nearest Shidōin.
